Young Founder is a program from Founder's Best Friend, where I am a cofounder. My day job is helping adults turn what they are good at into a business they can actually sell. This is the same work, handed down a generation.
Both of my kids have run something of their own. They have also worked alongside me in my business, which turned out to teach a different set of lessons than running their own thing did. Watching both happen at once is where this kit came from. I could see exactly which parts they figured out on their own, which parts they needed handed to them, and which parts I got wrong as the parent standing next to them.
That last part matters more than I expected. Most of what I had to learn was not how to teach selling. It was when to keep my mouth shut.
Being good at something and selling it are two different things. Nobody is born knowing the second one.
Through Founder's Best Friend I have helped many people launch and grow businesses. Almost none of them were held back by talent. They were excellent at the work. What nobody had ever taught them was how to package that into something a stranger would pay for, and they spent years thinking the problem was them.
That gap is fixable at forty. It is a lot easier to close at fourteen.
I want to pass this on to the next generation, and to the parents of the next generation. A kid can learn to price a job and ask for money. What they cannot do by themselves is grow up in a house where the adult knows how to coach that instead of taking it over. So the kit teaches both of you, and the parent's half is not an afterthought.
