Question

What age is Young Founder for?

The short answer

Eight to eighteen. The novel follows a twelve year old and a sixteen year old at the same time, so a younger reader has somebody to follow and so does an older one. What changes across the range is not the material but how much a parent holds: at eight to ten you are reading together and driving, by sixteen they run it alone. Wanting something of their own matters more than the number.

Eight to eighteen, and that is a wide range on purpose, because the book carries two kids at either end of it.

Andre is sixteen. Sophie is twelve. A younger reader follows Sophie and an older one follows Andre, and both threads run through every chapter, so nobody is reading about somebody too old or too young to be relevant.

What actually changes across that range is not the material, it is how much a parent holds.

Eight to ten. Reading together is normal at this end, and often better. The business will be simple, close to home, and for people who already know the family. A parent is driving, present, and handling anything electronic. The kid still sets the price and says it out loud, which is the part that matters.

Eleven or twelve. Reading alone, mostly working alone. Can set a price, explain what they do, and follow up with somebody who did not answer. Scheduling and payments still need an adult.

Thirteen to fifteen. This is the center of the range. Can run the whole thing with a parent nearby for rides, money, and anything requiring a signature.

Sixteen and up. Can run it independently, and the material that lands hardest is the later part: hiring, margin, and what happens when the business outgrows one person.

Two honest edges.

Below eight, the reading level is the obstacle rather than the ideas, and a lot of the workbook assumes a kid who can write out their own thinking.

Above eighteen this still works, but it is a book written for a teenager and an older reader will feel that in the voice.

The better question than age is whether the kid wants something of their own. A motivated eleven year old gets more out of this than an uninterested sixteen year old, every time.

A kid who cuts, edges, and cleans up usually starts between $25 and $40. Professionals charge about $30 to $85 a visit, and a young founder starting below that is being paid less for being unproven, not for being young.
