Car Detailing

Make cars look new again. Andre's real business.

Around $80
Medium

This is Andre's business. Not a drive-through wash, an actual detail. You wash and dry it properly, vacuum every seat and floor mat, wipe down the dash and the door panels, clean the glass until it disappears, and hand back a car that feels new inside. People will pay real money for that feeling, because most of them have been meaning to do it for months and never will.

Start for free

Book two cars before you buy a bucket

Andre started in his own driveway with his mom's car. Do that.

Detail one car for free, take a before-and-after photo of the inside, then show those two photos around and ask:

"I detail cars. Inside and out, about two hours, [your price]. Want me to do yours this Saturday?"

Two booked cars means go buy supplies. Zero means keep asking, or try something else, but you haven't lost a dollar.

The plan

Your simple plan

  1. Offer two levels. A basic wash, and a full detail for a lot more. Most people pick the full one when they see the difference.
  2. Work in your own driveway to start. Your hose, your outlet, your setup. Customers drop the car off.
  3. Do the inside last and best. Outside is what they see driving up. Inside is what they feel for the next month, and it's what gets you rehired.
  4. Photograph every car. Before and after, every single time. That album is your only advertising.
The gear

What you need, and what you can skip

Real supplies, but nowhere near what the pros carry.

Get these
  • Two buckets, one for soap and one to rinse your mitt. Shop this
  • Car wash soap, the kind that won't strip wax. Shop this
  • A microfiber wash mitt. Shop this
  • A stack of microfiber drying and detailing towels. Shop this
  • Interior cleaner and a glass cleaner. Shop this
  • Detailing brushes for vents and seams. Shop this
  • Tire and wheel cleaner. Shop this
  • A hand-applied wax to finish. Shop this
Skip these for now
  • A pressure washer. A hose with a good nozzle is fine.
  • A machine polisher. It can burn paint in the wrong hands, and it's a later purchase.
  • A steam cleaner or a carpet extractor. Vacuum plus elbow grease first.

The lesson from the book

Andre's first mistake wasn't the work, it was the price. He charged too little because he was afraid people would say no, and then he was exhausted, booked solid, and broke. Here's what he figured out: price the result, not the hours. A car that looks new again is worth a lot to somebody. Charge like it. The customers you lose over a fair price were never going to be good customers anyway.

How much money does a kid need to start a business?

Less than almost anyone expects, and for a lot of these ideas the honest answer is nothing until somebody has already said yes to a price.

How does a kid find their first customer?

Ten people who already know them, one prepared sentence, and an easy way for each of them to say no.

What do I do when my kid wants to quit?

Find out whether this is not working or just not fun right now. Those look identical from outside and they need opposite responses.
