Pet Sitting and Feeding

People travel. Their pets stay home. Somebody has to show up daily.

Easy

People go on vacation. Their pets stay home. Somebody has to feed them, fill the water, and check that everything is okay. That somebody can be you. This business is built entirely on trust and showing up daily, which is exactly the thing a reliable kid can be great at.

Line up a family before their next trip

Don't wait to be asked. Go find your first client.

Ask three families you know who travel:

"Next time you go away, I do pet visits. I'll come every day, feed your pet, fill the water, play for a bit, and text you a photo so you know they're happy. Would you want that?"

Even one yes for their next trip means you're in business. Get the details written down before they leave, not from the airport.

The plan

Your simple plan

  1. Take notes in the house, out loud, with the owner. How much food, what time, where the leash is, which vet, what to do if something seems wrong.
  2. Same time every day. Animals run on a clock even when people don't.
  3. Send a photo and one line every visit. "Ate everything, drank plenty, slept in the window." That message is what they're actually paying for.
  4. Charge per visit, not per day. Two visits a day is two visits. Say that up front so nobody is surprised.
The gear

What you need, and what you can skip

Almost nothing. Everything you need is already in the customer's house.

Get these
  • A small notebook for each house's instructions. Shop this
  • Hand sanitizer and a few disposable gloves for litter boxes. Shop this
Skip these for now
  • Pet toys and treats. Their house already has them, and allergies are real.
  • A pet first aid kit. The owner has one, and anything serious means calling them and the vet, not treating it yourself.
  • Uniforms, magnets, printed anything.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We only list gear the guide actually calls for, and the skip list is there because most of it you do not need yet.

The lesson from the book

Andre learned that trust is the actual product, and trust is built out of boring consistency. Nobody hands over a house key because you're charming. They do it because you showed up at 8:00 three days in a row and sent a photo each time.

Every visit you get right makes the next customer easier to win, because the first thing a neighbor asks is whether anyone else has used you.

How much money does a kid need to start a business?

Less than almost anyone expects, and for a lot of these ideas the honest answer is nothing until somebody has already said yes to a price.

Read the answer

How does a kid find their first customer?

Ten people who already know them, one prepared sentence, and an easy way for each of them to say no.

What do I do when my kid wants to quit?

Find out whether this is not working or just not fun right now. Those look identical from outside and they need opposite responses.
