Starter guide

Dog Walking

Walk dogs for neighbors who are stuck at work all day. Andre's first try.

Free to start
Easy

This is where Andre started, and it's one of the best first businesses there is. No money to begin, you can book a customer this week, and the entire job is being reliable. If you show up when you said you would, every time, you will beat every competitor you have.

Start for free

Get three yeses before you spend a dime

Do not buy anything yet. Not a leash, not bags, nothing. First find out whether people will actually pay you.

Walk your street this week and ask five neighbors who have dogs:

"Hi, I'm starting a dog walking service in the neighborhood. Three walks a week, same days, [your price] a walk. Would you want that for your dog?"

Three yeses and you have a business. Now go buy gear. Zero yeses and you just saved your money and learned something real. Either way you come out ahead.

The plan

Your simple plan

  1. Pick a small area. Your street and the couple behind it. Close enough to reach before and after school.
  2. Set a fixed schedule. Same days, same times. Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons is a real business. "Whenever you need me" is not.
  3. Text a photo every single walk. This is the whole trick. The owner is at work wondering about their dog, and one photo turns a service into peace of mind.
  4. Charge by the walk and collect weekly. Simple to track, simple to explain, and you never have to chase small amounts.
The gear

What you need, and what you can skip

Barely anything. That's the point of this one.

Get these
  • Waste bags, which are the one thing you absolutely cannot skip. Shop this
  • A spare sturdy leash for dogs whose owners don't leave one out. Shop this
  • A reflective vest or armband if you'll ever walk near dusk. Shop this
Skip these for now
  • Treats. Some dogs have allergies, and the owner may not want them. Ask first.
  • A hands-free waist leash, a fancy harness, a business shirt. None of it walks a dog better.
  • Business cards. Knocking on the door works better and costs nothing.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We only list gear the guide actually calls for, and the skip list is there because most of it you do not need yet.

The lesson from the book

Andre said yes to every dog that came his way, and it nearly broke him. Alone, each dog was easy. Stacked into one week, they ran him into the ground, and he started being late, which is the only thing that actually matters in this business.

So before you take a new client, lay every walk you already have onto one week and check that you can genuinely keep the promise. A yes you can't keep costs you far more than a no.

What should a kid charge to walk a dog?

A kid walking dogs in their own neighborhood usually starts between $10 and $18 for a thirty minute walk. Professional walkers average about $21 for the same walk.

Read the answer

How much money does a kid need to start a business?

Less than almost anyone expects, and for a lot of these ideas the honest answer is nothing until somebody has already said yes to a price.

Read the answer

How does a kid find their first customer?

Ten people who already know them, one prepared sentence, and an easy way for each of them to say no.

What do I do when my kid wants to quit?

Find out whether this is not working or just not fun right now. Those look identical from outside and they need opposite responses.
